Over nearly a century, the University of Alberta (UofA) has grown continually, expanding and changing to meet the varied educational aspirations of students from around the world. Currently, there are nearly 37,000 students studying at the UofA in more than 200 undergraduate and 170 graduate programs.

The UofA is located in Edmonton, which is the capital city of the province of Alberta in Western Canada. Edmonton is a fantastic destination for students, having been named Canada's Cultural Capital 2007 and offering a high quality of life with a safe and welcoming atmosphere. As a main hub for the oil and gas industry of Alberta, Edmonton offers a thriving economy with low unemployment rates and a first-rate education system.

 

UofA is recognized internationally as one of the most prestigious universities in Canada and continues to earn high international rankings. In 2006, UofA was ranked 55th in Newsweek's Top 100 Global Universities. UofA is also one of the CCTV's “World Famous Universities”. Since 1995, the UofA has secured 12 prestigious Industrial Research Chairs (IRC) in energy, climate change, and environment related fields – more than any other university in Canada. UofA leads the country with 26 professors holding 3M Teaching Fellowships, Canada's highest award for undergraduate university teaching excellence. Sponsored research funding is among the highest in Canada and UofA is leading the way in breakthroughs and discoveries in a wide range in fields ranging from health and social sciences to engineering and cutting-edge nanotechnology.

The UofA offers a diverse range of academic opportunities in 18 faculties: Agriculture, Forestry, and Home Economics, Arts, Augustana Campus, Business, Education, Engineering, Extension, Graduate Studies and Research, Law, Medicine and Dentistry, Native Studies, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Education and Recreation, Rehabilitation Medicine, Public Health, Campus Saint-Jean (French-language faculty), and Science. Over 2,500 international students are attending the UofA currently, representing more than 130 countries.

 

The facilities at the UofA are state-of-the-art, with several ranking among the finest in North America. The National Institute for Nanotechnology is Canada's flagship centre for nanotech research and is one of only a few such facilities in the world. The Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science will be one of only a few in the world to house interdisciplinary science research teams in one facility. Other cutting-edge UofA facilities include the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, the Alberta Diabetes Institute, the largest teaching hospital in Western Canada, the second largest research library system in the country, some of Canada's leading athletic facilities, technologically enhanced SMART classrooms, and the Timms Centre, which is one of Canada's top theatre training facilities. The China Institute at UofA is the largest in Canada, also one of the most funded institutes that study China in the world.

UofA offers over 80 student services, including academic, financial, personal, and medical services. The International Centre provides international students with advice and support throughout their studies. Upon arrival in Edmonton, new international students get a friendly airport greeting, followed by the three-day “Transitions” orientation program. The Centre also hosts many social events throughout the year, helping students stay connected with the UofA community. UofA also has eight residences that are home to more than 4,000 students.

The UofA is one of only a few in Canada that offers a number of scholarships to international students, offering over $24 million in undergraduate scholarships and awards each year to new and continuing students. “Academic Excellence” is the most important within all the scholarships offered only to international students, which usually require a minimum average grade of 80% in Grade 11 and 12.

International students have the opportunity to work while they study through on campus employment, the Off Campus Work Permit Program, cooperative work programs in the School of Business and the Faculty of Engineering, and various faculty-specific internships and work experience programs. Xing Liu, a Faculty of Engineering student from China, worked off campus and found the experience highly valuable. “I improved my language skills and learned a lot about Canadian culture,” says Liu, “Working off campus, you have a better chance to get a job that matches your interests and future career and learn some practical skills.” The office of Career and Placement Services is open to all UofA students and offers advice on all stages of the job search, from career planning to reviewing job offers.
