BEIJING - A suspect was returned to China from Greece Thursday as a campaign to capture economic fugitives continues, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
This was the second suspect that Chinese police have brought back from Greece since April 2015 during the "Fox Hunt" campaign, the ministry said.
The suspect, surnamed Ma, fled with more than 20 million yuan (over 2.9 million U.S. dollars), which was allegedly illegally obtained from members of the public from 2004 to 2006, according to police.
He fled overseas after the Municipal People's Procuratorate of Taiyuan approved his arrest on charges of illegal fundraising in June 2007. In October 2007, Ma was listed on an Interpol red notice.
China requested the extradition of Ma via diplomatic channels after he was detained by Greek police. Greece approved the request in April, according to the ministry.
