New train route in Yangtze River Delta

Another high-speed railway between Shanghai and Nanjing, Jiangsu province, is expected to shorten the journey between the two major cities in the Yangtze River Delta to less than an hour. The railway, which will travel from east to west along the south section of the Yangtze River, will have a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour. The project is expected to be completed by 2020.

Masters program in Shanghai recognized

The Master of Finance Program of the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been recognized as the best in Asia and the 14th globally, jumping 14 slots from last year when it participated in the ranking for the first time, according to a ranking by the Financial Times. This year, 60 business schools from all over the world made the ranking list.

Tracking devices for electric vehicles

Authorities in the city's Minhang district are piloting the use of tracking chips in electric vehicles, according to Labor Daily. The chips, which are installed in different parts of a vehicle, will be used to provide real-time location updates and can also be linked to mobile apps that drivers can download. The chips can also send alerts to the police whenever a vehicle is moved without first being properly unlocked.

Internet stars and their audience grow

As of May, the number of Internet celebrities on Chinese social networking platform Weibo who have at least 100,000 followers has increased 57.3 percent from last year, with the volume of followers surging 20.6 percent year-on-year to 465 million, according to a report published by iResearch on June 16 in Shanghai. The report also showed that 61.4 percent of users who follow online celebrities are male.

First drug smuggling case of the year

Authorities at Shanghai Pudong International Airport seized 389.68 grams of heroin that was hidden in a man's stomach during a routine check on May 3. The customs officer initiated an additional X-ray examination after noticing that the foreigner, who had traveled to China from Africa, was acting suspiciously. According to the man, his compatriot made him swallow 30 capsules containing the drug before departing for China.
