Skier born in 2002 set to enter finals at 2018 Winter Olympics

At the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics next month, Zhang Kexin, born in 2002, is expected to bring China its first medal in the women's halfpipe freestyle skiing event.

Zhang won the gold medal in the ladies' ski halfpipe event at the 2017-18 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup in Chongli, North China's Hebei province, Dec 22, 2017. The gold is the first won by a Chinese athlete at the event in different stops of the world cup.

The young woman took third place Dec 9 at Copper Mountain, USA, after beating Maddie Bowman, a US skier who was a gold medalist in the ski halfpipe event at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Zhang is training to prepare for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

So far, the gold and bronze medals have secured a place for her at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

The halfpipe freestyle skiing event was introduced to the Winter Olympics in 2014 as part of the Sochi Games. The Chinese national team has been practicing for this event for a few years.

"To enter the finals is my goal at Pyeongchang," said Zhang.
