Intl relations expert on China's outreach to world

According to Gosset, President Xi's Belt and Road Initiative, proposed in 2013 to boost connectivity through the Eurasian continent and the Indian Ocean, is the biggest global intellectual contribution during his first term from 2012 to 2017. Xi was re-elected as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee in October and as president in March

Gosset said another very important element is China's global contribution to the fight against climate change, which can lead to enormous economic impact and help reduce the threat of global security.

"We would not have had the Paris Agreement … on climate change without the leadership of China," said Gosset.

He cited the then chairman of the Paris conference and French foreign minister Laurent Fabius, who had said that the US and China signing the agreement was the very first step in achieving the Paris climate accord. Joining hands with President Xi, former US president Barack Obama had pushed for joint determinations by the world's biggest carbon emitters, while the Donald Trump administration is pulling the world's biggest economy out of this hard-won historic agreement.

Gosset firmly believes that China will adhere to the Paris climate accord and realize its promises, because this country is committed to building an ecological civilization.

Gosset was also impressed by Xi Jinping's proposal to build a community of shared future for humankind, which contrasts with the ideas of isolationism, unilateralism and protectionism from some world powers.

"It's going to be increasingly important and also a strong intellectual contribution of China under the leadership of Xi Jinping to have, let us put it this way, a better world," said Gosset.

He mentioned that the intellectual aspect of the Chinese global projection is relatively new in a sense and very important. "But now, the whole world is learning how to say the notion in Chinese, because it's important and because it's exactly what we need," said Gosset.

Gosset has listed three things that have made Xi's proposal of building a community of shared future of humankind matter.
