Even in the summer of 2015, when the Beijing Municipal Government announced that it would relocate to the vicinity of the village, it remained tranquil: villagers played cards and slept on mats by the roadside, illuminated by the warm neon lights. Others would often gather at the traffic lights at the village's main intersection chatting about the imminent changes ahead.
