China needs to continue promoting non-fossil fuel energy and high quality development to implement the Paris accord and curb carbon emissions, said an expert.

China, which already has the world's largest installed capacity of wind and solar power, should continue decreasing its reliance on coal and increasing investments in clean energy toward a low-carbon world, said Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University, during the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2018, or Summer Davos Forum, in Tianjin on Wednesday.

China has launched the world's largest carbon market. The concept of ecological civilization has become the core tenet of China's development strategy and it is believed this will inspire a new wave of environmental leadership across the globe.

China, with advanced experience and technology in fields of renewable energy, will set a good example for other developing countries and new economies and help them assume due duties and responsibilities fighting climate change, he said.

Advanced energy-saving technology is also important for the country's economic growth, Lin added.

Despite the fact that coal is yet an abundant and relatively inexpensive energy source for the country, China will gradually reduce reliance on coal-burning, a leading cause of emission, while stepping up efforts in fields of carbon trading, he said.
