Chongqing twin bridges win top civil engineering award

The Twin River Bridges in Southwest China's Chongqing municipality, a famous scenic spot, has won Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize, the country's top civil engineering award, Chongqing Daily reported.

The twin bridge consists of the Dongshuimen Bridge over the Yangtze River and the Qiansimen Bridge over the Jialing River. Looking from above, the twin bridges connecting Jiangbei district, Yuzhong peninsula and Nan'an district look like one long bridge.

The Dongshuimen Bridge, opened to traffic in 2014, crosses the Yangtze River with a cable-stayed main span that is 445 meters long, connecting the Yuzhong and Nan'an Districts. It is the world's longest single plane partially cable-stayed bridge by the length of main span with two towers.

The Qiansimen Bridge, opened to traffic in 2015, crosses the Jialing River with a cable-stayed main span that is 312 meters, connecting the Jiangbei and the Yuzhong Districts. It's the world's longest single plane cable-stayed bridge by the length of main span with one tower.

Both are double deck structures carrying four lanes of traffic on their upper decks and two rail lines on their lower decks.

Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize awards civil engineering projects that have made great achievements on technological innovation and technological application.

The Twin River Bridges are sceneries by themselves while looking separately and complement each other nicely when looking together, according to its review on the official website of China Civil Engineering Society. "The bridges, blended with surrounding environment, are landmark buildings combining transportation, landscape and technological innovation."
