China to remain steadfast protecting national security

"First, China has undisputable sovereignty over islands and their surrounding waters in the South China Sea, backed by a wealth of historical and legal basis," Shao said.

For a long period of time, various nations' normal passage and flight in the region have never been obstructed. "There is no issue over the freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea," he said.

However, the US has frequently sent vessels and aircraft to trespass into Chinese maritime territory and airspace, and has conducted intense intelligence gathering and special drills in the region.

"These actions damage the peace and security of the region," Shao said. "As a result, the PLA has installed necessary defense equipment on the islands in accordance with security needs. This is within the natural rights of a sovereign state, and a necessary measure to counter those provocative actions."

Mutual trust also is growing between China and countries in the region due to joint efforts. The overall situation in the South China Sea is stable and becoming better, Shao said.

"Countries from the region have the will, wisdom and capability to manage differences and jointly promote peace, thus transforming the area into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation," he said.

On the Korean Peninsula question, China insists on denuclearizing the peninsula, and solving issues through dialogue and consultation, Shao said.

"China has consistently, seriously, fully and rigorously implemented the United Nation's resolutions regarding the peninsula," he said. "China also is willing to work with various parties to promote the denuclearization of the peninsula via political solutions."

On Friday, State Councilor and Defense Minister General Wei Fenghe met with Shanahan and both sides agreed to deepen exchanges and cooperation, properly manage risks and allow military-to-military relations to become a stabilizing factor for bilateral ties.
