Event marks founding of historic mountaineering school

Over the years, outstanding students from the school have attended many key climbing events in China, such as the 50-year anniversary in 2003 of the first ascent of Mount Qomolangma (known as Everest in the West), the Qomolangma elevation resurvey in 2005, and the 2008 Olympic torch relay at Qomolangma.

More than 200 of the school's graduates have been given the title of national sports master, 450 have successfully climbed Qomolangma, and 53 have received the State sports awards.

Since 2002, the school has worked with French National Skiing and Mountain Guide School in Chamonix, France, and it has trained many mountaineering athletes, guides, alpine rescuers, and mountaineering industry staff.

"Meanwhile, the school has also trained many outstanding climbing athletes, including Rinchen Lhamo, Sonam Gyatso, Penba Tashi, and Pema Yudron," said Wangchen Gelek.

Tselo, an official with the Chinese Mountaineering Association, said by producing professionals in different fields of mountaineering, the school has helped fill vacancies in China's mountaineering industry.

"The school has helped the country to accelerate its upgrade and transformation of mountaineering industry, and it has gained remarkable achievements in Tibet's mountaineering and outdoor sports."
