EU's low-carbon blueprint published in Chinese

A European Union analysis underlying its vision for climate neutrality by 2050, which experts say holds lessons for China's low-carbon development path, has been published in Chinese.

The book was launched on Monday at an event hosted by the Tsinghua University Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development and the EU delegation to China that focused on the strategies being developed to put Europe and China on the path to low-carbon development by the middle of this century.

He Jiankun, chairman of the institute's academic committee, spoke highly of the EU analysis, calling it a "win-win strategy for economic development and climate change".

"While the EU is proposing to achieve the carbon neutrality targets by 2050, particular emphasis is placed on the development of a prosperous, modern and competitive economy," He said.

He said that in addition to realizing zero emissions, the EU strategy also aimed to make the economy more prosperous and modern, improve people's living standards, and enhance the bloc's competitive advantages.

"And this important guiding ideology is also the guide and strategic starting point for China to realize a long-term low-carbon development strategy," he said.

Artur-Runge Metzger, director of the EU's Directorate General for Climate Action, said, "China and the EU, important partners in combating global climate change, face similar opportunities and many similar challenges in decarbonization and have much to learn from each other in designing their long-term strategies."

Published in November last year, the analysis covers all relevant EU policy areas targeting the Paris Agreement objective of keeping the rise in global temperatures to well below 2 C, with a view to keeping it to 1.5 C.
