Sculptor explores 3-D printing at solo show

For years, well-established Beijing sculptor Sui Jianguo has been exploring 3D printing technology in his creation.

Not only does he explores the influence of new technology and media on the approaches to art, but also examines the changing relationship between human's physical activities and technology, as well as between the individuals and the surrounding.

Sui's ongoing exhibition, Phenomenon & Suchness: Sui Jianguo, at Beijing's One Art Museum through Jan 3, 2020, shows more than 40 works created using high-definition 3D printers and metal powders.

The assistance of new technology allows sculptures to create an accurate presentation of hand prints and the texture of the material, transmitting a feeling distinctive with that of the traditional way of sculpting.

The works, instead of emphasizing a particular shape or subject, draw much attention to the value of metal powders, not only as a material but also as the center of art creation. By doing so, Sui also provides a metaphor for a more active role of individuals in a time of creativity.
