Canada into Davis Cup final for first time after thrilling win over Russia

MADRID - Canada advanced to the final of the Davis Cup tennis tournament for the first time in their history with a thrilling fightback to beat Russia 2-1 on Saturday.

The Canadian duo of Vasek Pospisil/Denis Shapovalov beat the Russian duo of Andrey Rublev/Karen Khachanov 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) in a match that saw the Canadian pair fight back from 0-3 down in the decisive tiebreak.

Rublev had put the Russians ahead in the tie when he claimed his fourth victory of the week - with all of those wins coming in singles matches - by beating Pospisil who had been unbeaten in the tournament in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The Canadians levelled the tie after a thrilling second match which saw Denis Shapovalov beat Karen Khachanov 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 after coming back from three break points down in the final game of the last set.

Canada will play the winner of the second semifinal between Spain and Britain.
