Wang Yi: Unilateralism, hegemony biggest threats to peace

State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Wednesday that unilateralism and hegemony are the biggest threats to peace and stability in today's world.

He made the remark when meeting with the Republic of Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha in Seoul while paying a two-day visit to the ROK.

Wang called on the two neighboring countries to strengthen communication and cooperation, as well as understand and support each other in the face of an international situation full of uncertainties and changes unseen in a century.

China and the ROK should jointly safeguard their legitimate rights and interests and play a constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability, he said.

According to Wang, nowadays unilateralism is disrupting the current international order and hegemonic acts are challenging the norms governing international relations.

China stands ready to work with all responsible countries including the ROK to uphold multilateralism, adhere to the principles of fairness and justice, and safeguard the international system with the United Nations as its core by taking practical actions, Wang said.

China will also maintain international order on the basis of international law and the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization as its cornerstone with these countries, he said.

He stressed that China always pursues an independent foreign policy of peace and maintains that all countries, no matter big or small, are all equal.

Wang also reiterated China's opposition to the practice of the big and strong bullying the small and weak, and opposition to interference of other countries’ internal affairs.
