City-level museums in Beijing to reopen May 1

The Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage announced on Wednesday that city-level museums will gradually resume the reception of public visitors starting May 1.

All museums in Beijing have been shut down since the outbreak of COVID-19 before Spring Festival.

According to the guidance of the municipal administration, each museum will create their own tailored measures to ensure safety, but some policies are universal. The whereabouts in the past 14 days and health condition of museum employees will be strictly checked, and a 1.5-meter social distance is required.

Daily numbers of visitors will be capped in the venues through online reservation, and group visits are still halted.

Despite the reopening, the originally planned exchange exhibitions touring to other provinces or overseas will still be on hold for some time, along with academic communication.

Though the National Cultural Heritage Administration gave the green light to reopen museums in March in some parts of China where the epidemic has been gradually controlled, museums in Beijing have still been on the top-tier alarm.

And the national-level museums in Beijing, like the Palace Museum and the National Museum of China, have not yet released a reopening schedule.
