Frog village offers a ribbiting spectacle

In Jiangsu province, Dongshan townships's frog village, with more than 60 kinds of frogs, might be good choice for jumping into the upcoming three-day Dragon Boat Festival.

In the village, you may learn about frogs, hear them croak and have coffee at a cafe on a frogpond.

The village's frog fame came in 2014, when an environmental protection expert from Taiwan found 61 of the articulate amphibians.

Before that, the village was mainly populated by senior citizens and children after the parents hopped off to work in big cities. The seniors raised crabs and planted tea and fruits to make a living. Most of them earned around 30,000 yuan ($4,235) a year.

Nowadays, many migrant parents have returned to work in the hotels, tea plantations and paddies. They earn about 100,000 yuan a year, enjoy a better environment and have time to be with their families.

Amid the omnipresent frog motif, tourists in early summer can pick loquats and peaches, taste freshbay berry wine and make tea.

"More clubs, bookstores and cafes will be opening in the near future," said Xu Ji, a member of the village committee. "Tourists may also appreciate the fireflies, watch light shows and buy agricultural products in the village."
