Wawrinka loses to Italian teenager at Italian Open

ROME -- Three-time Grand Slam winner Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland was bundled out of the Italian Open in the first round on Tuesday after he lost to 18-year-old Italian Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets.

The 10th seed, the oldest in the Rome Masters draw at 35, lost 6-0, 7-6 (2) to Musetti who is ranked 249th in the world.

Playing on home soil, Musetti will meet Kei Nishikori of Japan in the second round, but the youngest player said he would "enjoy the victory" before that.

Elsewhere, Russia's Andrey Rublev beat Argentinian qualifier Facundo Bagnis 6-4, 6-4 and will meet Poland's Hubert Hurkacz in the next round.

12th seed Denis Shapovalov beat Argentina's Guido Pella 6-2, 6-3, and his fellow Canadian Milos Raonic, seeded 13th, ousted France's Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Marco Cecchinato of Italy labored to beat Britain's Kyle Edmund 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 and is set to meet Serbia's Filip Krajinovic.

Top men's seeds Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, and top women's seed Simona Halep will kick off their campaigns on Wednesday.

In the women's draw, former world no.1 Angelique Kerber, the 15th seed, lost 6-3, 6-1 to the Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova, who now faces Daria Kasatkina of Russia.

Elsewhere, ninth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain disposed of American Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-3, and former French Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova had to fight hard for a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over the U.S.'s Bernarda Pera.
