China's consumer price index up 0.9% in April

China's consumer price index, a main gauge of inflation, grew by 0.9 percent year-on-year in April, versus the 0.4 percent growth in March, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.

The level of the CPI declined by 0.3 percent month-on-month. With pork production picking up, pork prices continued to go down by 11 percent in April compared the prior month, bringing the overall food prices down by 2.4 percent.

In April, the growth in core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, came in at 0.7 percent year-on-year, up from 0.3 percent in the previous month.

The level of non-food prices was mainly pushed by robust growth in tourism during the holidays. With COVID-19 effectively controlled, more people went out traveling, causing prices to jump for plane tickets, travel agency services, rental cars and hotel accommodations, up by 21.6 percent, 5.3 percent, 4.3 percent and 3.9 percent respectively.

Rising international commodity prices also pushed up China's producer price index, which gauges factory-gate prices, the NBS said. PPI rose by 6.8 percent year-on-year in April, up by 0.9 percent month-on-month.
