Typhoon shutters Shanghai transport as storm hits

Influenced by Typhoon In-Fa, the Shanghai railway authority announced on Sunday that all the trains bound for the municipality from Beijing South Railway Station were suspended starting at 1:30 pm.

Also, all high-speed trains bound for Shanghai railway stations from all directions will be suspended beginning at 7 pm Sunday.

The municipality's metro operator announced all sections of the metro running above ground and on elevated tracks had been suspended since Sunday afternoon to ensure safety.

Also since Sunday afternoon, all buses crossing bridges over the Huangpu River had been suspended for service. Large passenger buses and large trucks have been banned from taking the Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge connecting Chongming Island with downtown Shanghai.

Typhoon In-Fa made landfall at Putuo, Zhoushan city in Shanghai's neighboring Zhejiang province in East China at about 12:30 pm Sunday, with maximum wind speed reading 38 meters per second.

Moving northwest with gusts and downpours at a speed of 15 km per hour, the typhoon is expected to swirl through Hangzhou Bay and make landfall again between Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, and Shanghai's Pudong on Sunday evening.

Shanghai maintained the second-highest level of warning against typhoon and the third-highest level of warning against rainstorms on Sunday since issuing the alerts on Saturday afternoon.
