US' South Pacific policy aimed at containing China, says expert

US policy on the South Pacific has the same goal as that on the South China Sea, which is to contain China's growth and influence in the maritime domain, said Hou Yi, director of China Ocean History Research Office of the Institute of Chinese Borderland Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, at a seminar on Wednesday.

Since 2010, the US has attached growing importance to the South Pacific island countries and strengthened cooperation with the region in political ties, economic assistance, military and security fields.

Hou said US policy on the South Pacific is aimed at hindering the development of the relations between China and Pacific island countries, and China should counter the US policy by enhancing its own governance capacity and participation in its international governance.

Hou hinted that China could continue to deepen cooperation with South Pacific island countries in the field of economy, trade and agriculture. China can also leverage the strength of its enterprises in clean energy, and explore innovative ways of cooperation with island countries in environmental protection.

Hou made the remarks at a seminar titled "The Status Quo and Prospects of South China Sea Security" held in Beijing on Oct 27. Hosted by China Daily Op-Ed department and China Daily website, the seminar was attended by experts and scholars from Chinese academies and universities.
