Mainland speaks out against Blinken's Taiwan statement

A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Thursday urged the United States to stop sending wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" forces after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed the US would make sure the island had the means to defend itself.

When asked at a recent forum about the Taiwan question, Blinken said "many countries" would "take action" if the mainland were to use force to alter the status quo on the island.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said in a statement on Thursday, "Some politicians in the US have repeatedly made erroneous remarks on the Taiwan question."

It must be pointed out the US government has made serious commitments to China on the Taiwan question, she said.

The three Sino-US Joint Communiques are principles the US government must abide by with concrete action, she added.

Zhu urged the US to stop the wrong words and deeds on the Taiwan question, stop sending wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" forces and avoid further damaging peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.

She warned the Democratic Progressive Party authorities on Taiwan any provocations by colluding with foreign forces for independence will only end in failure.
