Cultivating a love of nature
Workers from nearby factories followed the example, turning afforestation into a trend in the desert. Barren wilderness soon made way for verdant forests.
"I am glad to have made a small contribution to protect the environment. I feel delighted when my green mission motivates others to care for nature," says the nonagenarian, who has pledged to carry on planting trees till the day he dies.
Wang's fierce determination has inspired many in Karamay to take up gardening and afforestation.
In the past few decades, the city has transformed itself from a nondescript desert outpost to a key industrial hub, serving as a successful model for afforestation in the country.
Yanming Park has become an informal education center for youth. Young men and women often come to listen to stories told by Wang and his teammates about the rigors of the olden days, or just to catch a glimpse of the green wonder.
"I hope our community spirit will be passed down for generations and that Karamay will stay evergreen," Wang says.
