New book lays out plan to improve hypertension diagnosis and treatment in China

Three Chinese doctors have compiled the work of nearly 200 experts and scholars in order to publish new book in the field of hypertension research in China.

Yu Zhenqiu is the chief physician of the hypertension department at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, affiliated with Capital Medical University, and is also the director of the hypertension department at Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University. Mou Jianjun is the director of the cardiology department at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. Zhong Jiuchang is the director of the heart disease center of Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital, which is also affiliated with Capital Medical University. Together they have written the book as a summary of the achievements and practical experience related to the field of hypertension prevention and treatment in China.

The book includes a comprehensive evaluation of the latest progress, achievements and methods of various fields of hypertension at home and abroad, and proposes systematic revisions to meet the practical needs for hypertension prevention, diagnoses, treatment and research in China's future.

"After working in Guizhou province for years as the director of the hypertension department at the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University, I helped this province to establish a five-level medical system and a talent team for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of hypertension," said Yu.

"This work experience provides an accurate, practical and valuable basis for hypertension classification diagnosis and treatment, coordinated diagnosis and treatment between different departments, hypertension management and health promotion in the book," said Yu.

At present, it is estimated that there are 245 million adults aged 15 and above with hypertension in China. Of them, blood pressure was effectively controlled in only 37.3 percent of treated patients, making hypertension a serious health threat to Chinese.
