Experiencing diversity and endless charms of Shanghai

Editor's note: We have asked participants of Shanghai universities' summer programs for foreigners to share their stories. Linh-Ha Nguyen from Vietnam participated in the 2023 Experience Diverse China Summer Program by East China Normal University.

I am Linh-Ha Nguyen from Vietnam, a proud participant of the Experience Diverse China program at East China Normal University in Shanghai. My campus life here has been nothing short of transformative, enlightening and brimming with awe-inspiring experiences.?As a curious explorer and a lover of learning, I have found this one-month summer experience in Shanghai to be a remarkable journey.

It has not only given me a profound understanding of Shanghai but has also opened my heart to the rich tapestry of Chinese culture and its vibrant people.

From the very first day I arrived at ECNU, I found myself immersed in a whirlwind of knowledge and cultural exploration.

The university's commitment to fostering a dynamic and diverse learning environment is evident through the numerous lectures and activities about Chinese culture, traditions, and different art forms.

These sessions have not only broadened my understanding of China's heritage but also ignited a sense of curiosity within me to explore more.

Stepping out of the university, I embarked on "an adventure" through the captivating city of Shanghai.

I am deeply impressed by Shanghai's modernity, bustle and development.
Observing Shanghai's bustling streets, the rhythm of the city's sound became a symphony of progress and ambition.

However, Shanghai's allure goes beyond its modernity. By visiting museums, libraries, art galleries, iconic attractions and tasting many types of foods and beverages, I witnessed Shanghai through various lenses, each portraying the city in a very unique way.

I adore every aspect of Shanghai — from the breathtaking sunset over the Huangpu River, the radiant glow of the Oriental Pearl, to the refreshing summer breeze that greets me at night.

I cherish the post-rain freshness that revitalizes the city. I love the diversity of Shanghai's food, where I can taste the amazing different flavors from all parts of China.

I enjoy walking under the trees of Luxun Park and engaging in discussions with my friends about art and philosophy.

I relish attending lectures on Hanfu, Chinese traditional arts, and the great writers, poets, and artists who have left a lasting impact on me.

I cherish attending music concerts featuring traditional Chinese music instruments.

The melodic notes and enchanting rhythms evoke a profound sense of nostalgia, transporting me back in time to thousands of years ago. In these soul-stirring moments, Shanghai's voices and its unique melody deeply touch my soul.

Besides Shanghai's physical beauty and architectural wonders, it is the essence of the people that has left an indelible mark on my heart.

The warmth and hospitality extended to me have been beyond compare.

Shanghai embraces me with open arms, creating an atmosphere that made me feel at home.

As I conclude my journey in Shanghai, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I have gained, the friendships I have forged, and the knowledge I have acquired.

I am excited to return to explore Shanghai further, and I am also looking forward to visiting other cities in China.
