Lithium battery factory to launch over 12th Energy Storage International Conference and Expo

Lithium battery maker Ampace, a joint venture of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd, the world's largest electric vehicle battery maker, and Amperex Technology Limited, a leading producer of lithium-ion batteries, launched on Thursday its latest power storage facility for commercial and industrial use at the ongoing 12th Energy Storage International Conference and Expo in Beijing.

The facility, named Ampace C5, features full-temperature range operations that have no cooling requirement, which the company said will enable a 46 percent cost reduction in 10 years for users while remaining reliable.

The Ampace C5 machine abandons the traditional liquid and air-cooling mode, which is essential for traditional power storage facilities in the way that the high temperature could cause battery fluid evaporation and damage to its internal structure which cannot be corrected, the company said.

Such a change is backed by the Kunlun Battery Cell 2.0 in which a new cathode, anode, electrolyte materials and double-headed battery tab structure were adopted, which effectively enhanced the battery's thermal stability, and guaranteed the high reliability and long-cycle performance of the battery in different working environments, it said.

Ampace C5 also adopted Ampace's self-developed "Shield Cell" technology to contain the battery cell's thermal runaway. The explosion-relief valve on the top of the cabinet provides a safer way of explosion relief and protects the safety of surrounding personnel and property, it added.

The facility is expected to start mass production in July, the company said.
