Nanjing becoming more child-friendly

A community in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, has recently built psychological counseling rooms, libraries, classrooms and related facilities to create a better environment for the large number of children living there.

Wan Liumei, Party secretary of the Chengxian community in the Xinjiekou subdistrict of Nanjing's Xuanwu district, said it has also started dozens of special courses for children in cooperation with the Nanjing Library and Southeast University.

"We serve children with high-quality educational resources," she said.

Nanjing was one of the second batch of cities selected last year to participate in a national initiative to build child-friendly cities, and 110 child-friendly communities have now been built there.

Wang Yumei, vice-chairwoman of the Nanjing Women's Federation, said a series of child-friendly community activities have been organized this year, allowing children to appreciate the beauty of their communities and the city.

Liu Jiayi, a primary school pupil from Gaochun district, said she enjoyed the scenery on both sides of the Yangtze River while participating in a river cruise.

"Crossing the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was particularly spectacular," Liu told local media. "I have learned some historical knowledge and poetry about the Yangtze River."

She said they also learned about environmental protection during the cruise.

Tao Kaili, another pupil, said children were also taught to protect the Yangtze River and avoid littering.

"The teachers showed us around the cruise cabin and taught us how to wear life jackets to protect our safety during the tour," she said.

In addition to the Yangtze River cruise, more than 40 nonprofit study routes have also been organized for local children to experience Nanjing's charms this year.
