Chief technician shares insights into good practices

Hard work, dedication and an eye for detail and innovation are what it takes to be an exceptional electrical technician, according to Liu Yuhua, one of the chief technicians for Jiangsu province at State Grid Dongtai Power Supply.

During a workshop on Sept 12, the model worker demonstrated the use of a multimeter and checked the data with his team members diligently.

"In the field of substation maintenance, besides being hardworking, the operator must also be good at thinking," said Liu.

For some, a single task may take four hours to complete, while others working with greater efficiency may finish the same task in two hours, he said.

Through his years of experience, Liu has found that good equipment and methodology are key, as well as a willingness to go beyond traditional practices and innovate.

Once, he and his team were responsible for the installation and debugging of a new piece of equipment. During the process, he found that the installation of the isolation switch's operating mechanism was time-consuming and laborious. Following the original installation method would not allow completion within the specified time, so they developed a new isolation switch electric mechanism installation and debugging platform. What originally required five days of work was now completed easily in two days with significantly improved construction quality. This achievement was awarded first prize for quality control by State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power.

To fully leverage the role of his workshop, the team is actively recruiting young employees to join. Although young employees have less work experience, they usually offer fresh perspectives. With solid theoretical foundations, they can provide different ideas.

Regarding the team members' research and development efforts, Liu said: "As a mentor, my role is more about guiding and sharing experiences. Faced with new technologies and applications, more and more young people in the company are at the forefront, and I feel recharged when I'm with them."
