Beijing's second Mandarin Oriental hotel opens in hutong neighborhood

Mandarin Oriental Qianmen in Beijing opened its doors in early September, marking the hotel group's second hotel in the Chinese capital.

Nestled in the heart of a traditional hutong (alleyway) neighborhood within the Beijing Central Axis — the capital's cultural artery that has been listed as a World Heritage Site — the hotel is steps away from iconic sites like the Forbidden City, Qianmen and the Temple of Heaven.

"We are truly honored to open the doors of our unique hutong sanctuary, offering guests an unparalleled hospitality experience in the Chinese capital," Andy Guan, general manager of Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, said at the opening ceremony on Sept 2.

Following the ceremony, the much-anticipated signature fan of Mandarin Oriental Qianmen was unveiled. Designed by renowned Chinese artist Xu Bing, the hotel centerpiece incorporates his original "Square Character Calligraphy", which arranges alphabets into rectangular forms that resemble Chinese characters. "Unveil Beijing's Soul" is inscribed on the fan in Chinese ink, capturing the spirit of the hotel.

With 42 courtyard houses, the new property features exquisite Oriental aesthetics, incorporating contemporary luxury, sumptuous heritage and art into its expansive, luxurious accommodations.

Dining experiences that can't be missed at the hotel include Yan Garden, where a Michelin-starred chef and his team craft Cantonese cuisine.

Guests can also enjoy innovative drinks and upscale Beijing-inspired bar fare at Tiao, a contemporary cocktail bar, or indulge in authentic, relaxed regional Italian dishes at Vicini. For a more serene escape, Maple Lounge provides an intimate setting, serving fine teas in a tranquil courtyard.
