China's charging infrastructure covers 98% of highway service areas

China's charging infrastructure capacity significantly improved in 2024 and further supports the rapid electrification of China's vehicle fleet, the National Energy Administration said.

The total number of charging facilities across the country reached almost 12.82 million units by the end of last year, a 49 percent year-on-year increase. Total annual charging volume exceeded 110 billion kilowatt-hours, representing a 38 percent growth compared to the previous year, according to data released by the National Energy Administration on Thursday.

Charging facilities along highways also saw a notable increase, with 35,000 charging piles installed in service areas nationwide, achieving 98 percent coverage, it said.

During the 2024 National Day holiday, electric vehicle charging demand on highways hit a record high, with total charging volume reaching 72.15 million kilowatt-hours. The average daily charging volume stood at 10.31 million kilowatt-hours, marking a 34 percent increase compared to the May Day holiday of 2024 and an 80 percent surge from the same holiday period in 2023.

This milestone reflects the rapid growth in EV adoption and the robust development of charging infrastructure in China, it said.
