Gulangyu, located in Xiamen city of Fujian province, has been lauded as a "museum of world architecture", the "island of pianos" and the "crown jewel". China Daily journalist Erik Nilsson roamed through the island's winding lanes, visited the iconic Bagua Mansion, climbed Sunlight Rock for a panoramic view, and participated in a music performance. He delved into the stories of how efforts spearheaded by Xi Jinping, then vice-mayor of Xiamen, helped preserve and pass down the "cultural heritage left by our ancestors".
