Patriotism takes spotlight at symposium marking wartime commemoration

Top political adviser Wang Huning called on Tuesday for upholding a correct historical view of World War II, at a symposium marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Addressing 340 attendees, including representatives from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities, Wang — a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the country's top political advisory body — said the war's victory was a shared achievement of all Chinese people under the CPC's united front.

He praised the contributions of compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities, saying that their patriotism would continue to inspire future generations.

"History must be remembered, martyrs must be honored, peace must be cherished," Wang said. He called for carrying forward the national spirit to unite all Chinese and gather strength to advance Chinese modernization and realize national rejuvenation.

Wang reiterated China's adherence to the "one country, two systems" policy to maintain Hong Kong's and Macao's stability and prosperity.

He also called for upholding the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, opposing "Taiwan independence" and external interference, and safeguarding the victory of Taiwan's restoration to China following Japanese occupation as a result of the war.
