Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve

It is located in Jilin Province and covers 16 dormant and active volcanoes and their crater lakes. The highest peak on the Chinese side of Mount Changbai's ridge is 'White Cloud Peak' at 2,691 m and in its caldera can be found 'Heavenly Lake', hot springs and waterfalls.

Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve

Situated in the Guangdong Province, it is mostly covered by (sub-) tropical forest. In contrast to the disturbed surrounding forests, the Reserve comprises rare primary forests of at least 400 years age.

Wolong Biosphere Reserve

It is located in Sichuan Province, covering an area of about 700,000 hectares. Established in 1963, the Reserve joined the International Man and Biosphere Reserve Network of UNESCO in 1980. It is considered to be the real hometown of wild pandas.

Fanjingshan Biosphere Reserve

It is located in Guizhou Province, favoring highly diverse types of vegetation and relief. It is an island of metamorphic rock in a sea of karst, home to many plant and animal species that originated in the Tertiary period, between 65 million and 2 million years ago.

Xilin Gol Biosphere Reserve

It is situated in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It was established as China's first grassland biosphere reserve in 1987 to protect the biodiversity of a typical steppe ecosystem and to develop models of sustainable grassland resource use for improved well-being of the local people. The area is extensively grazed by wild herbivores and domestic livestock managed mainly by sedentary herders.

Wuyishan Biosphere Reserve

It sits on the highest section of north Wuyi Mountain Range in Fujian Province. Established in 1979, the Reserve joined the International Man and Biosphere Reserve Network of UNESCO in 1986 as the biggest and the most comprehensive extant semi-subtropical forest system in Southeast China. It is called a rare species database and "Origin of Model Specimen."

Bogeda Biosphere Reserve

It is located in the east part of the Tianshan Mountains on the southern brim of the Kurbantungut desert of the Zhunger Basin. This biosphere reserve encompasses glaciers, (sub-) alpine meadows, forests, steppes, deserts, sand dunes and alluvial plains. One habitat of special interest is the mid-mountain forest which prevents floods and erosion and represents an important water reservoir for the area.

Shennongjia Biosphere Reserve

It located in Hubei Province. Featuring an intact subtropical forest ecosystem, it is the only well-preserved natural resources including valuable and rare animals and plants. There are over 20 peaks in the reserve, and the highest peak is called Shennongding (Shennong Peak) with 3105.4 meters above sea level-the First Peak in Central China, which makes Shennongjia has a nickname of the Roof of Central China.
