Jilin rice-crab farming system improves saline-alkali land

At the Huiju Agricultural Technology Development Co breeding base in Zhenlai county of Baicheng city, Jilin province, workers are excited for their upcoming harvest of high-quality crabs, which have been raised in the paddy fields for around five months.

The integrated rice-crab farming system makes use of saline-alkali land resources by introducing crabs and crayfish, which improve soil permeability and reduce pests and weeds. As a result, the need for pesticides and fertilizers is minimized, which helps the ecological environment of the rice fields and increases the value of the rice.

After harvesting, the crabs will be delivered directly to first-tier cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou in Guangdong province, Chengdu in Sichuan province, and Wuhan in Hubei province.
