Women in China benefit from more comprehensive, reliable, equitable social security: white paper

BEIJING -- As China has established the world's largest social security system, women in the country now enjoy more comprehensive, reliable, and equitable social security, a white paper released Friday by the State Council Information Office said.

According to the white paper titled "China's Achievements in Women's Well-Rounded Development in the New Era," medical and old-age insurance systems have achieved full coverage in China. In 2024, 651 million women, or 49.1 percent of all participants, were covered by basic medical insurance.

Additionally, 260 million women were covered by basic pension insurance for rural and non-working urban residents, while 260 million women participated in the basic pension scheme for urban employees.

Maternity protection for women has also improved significantly in China, said the white paper. It noted that by the end of 2024, 111 million women were covered by maternity insurance.

Social security for women in need is further strengthened, noted the white paper.
