Wang Yi urges UN reforms to address multilateralism challenges

Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday warned that multilateralism is facing serious challenges and emphasized the urgent need for reforms to strengthen the United Nations.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Michelle Bachelet, former president of Chile, who is in China to attend the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women.

China, Wang noted, was among the first countries to sign the UN Charter and has consistently been a steadfast supporter of the UN. He highlighted China's commitment to genuine multilateralism, adherence to international law, fulfillment of international responsibilities, and efforts to support developing countries, promoting the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.

History and facts will show that unilateral bullying "has no support", the world will inevitably move toward multipolarity, and the UN will overcome risks and challenges, Wang said.

Noting her role in advancing a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Chile during her presidency and her contributions to gender equality as the first executive director of UN Women, Wang praised Bachelet as a "globally renowned political figure" and "longtime friend of the Chinese people".

He expressed hope that Bachelet would continue to contribute positively to UN endeavors and global peace and stability.

Bachelet said the high-level development of relations between Chile and China reflects shared values, mutual support for multilateralism, peaceful dispute resolution, and the UN's central role in international affairs.

She called for joint efforts to strengthen the UN through reforms and address global challenges, while expressing support for China's vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity to create a better future for all.
