CNPC's Changqing oilfield sees production cross 60 million metric tons

China National Petroleum Corp's Changqing oilfield announced on Thursday that its annual oil and gas equivalent production has exceeded 60 million metric tons.

This marks the sixth consecutive year the field has maintained this output level since first achieving the 60 million ton status in 2020, cementing its position as China's largest ultra-large oil and gas base, it said.

Changqing Oilfield, which spans the provincial regions of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, operates in reservoirs characterized by low pressure, low permeability, and low abundance. Effectively developing these reserves is considered a global technical challenge.

Through intensified exploration, development efforts, and technological breakthroughs, Changqing oilfield's oil and gas equivalent production hit a historic high last year, accounting for one-sixth of China's total domestic output for the year.

In a push for technological innovation, Changqing built China's first hydraulic fracturing test site for shale oil development at the Qingcheng field, improving single-well output.

In line with China's "dual carbon" goals, the oilfield is developing new quality productive forces by participating in large-scale multi-energy complementary new energy base projects, integrating solar, wind, gas, storage, and hydrogen. It has constructed 2,780 photovoltaic power stations, with a cumulative power generation exceeding one billion kilowatt-hours.

Furthermore, Changqing has maintained an annual natural gas output of over 50 billion cubic meters since 2022, supplying half of the gas transmitted via the West-to-East Gas Pipeline.

This volume ensures gas supply for over 50 major cities and contributes green momentum to key national strategic initiatives, it said.
