China’s top diplomat calls on UK to take rational, pragmatic approach

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi on Friday expressed hope that the United Kingdom would view China's development in a rational and friendly manner and pursue a positive and pragmatic China policy during a meeting with UK Prime Minister’s National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell in Beijing.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the current international situation is marked by transformation and turbulence.

Noting that China and the UK are both permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, he said the two countries bear significant international responsibilities.

Both sides should maintain strategic communication, enhance mutual trust and strengthen necessary coordination, Wang said.

He expressed the hope that London would work with Beijing to meet each other halfway, address problems directly and focus on the overarching theme of cooperation to promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral ties, thereby making positive contributions to world peace, development and prosperity.

Wang also elaborated on China’s principled position on issues related to Japan, expressing the hope that the UK would continue to adhere to the one-China principle and work with China to uphold the outcomes of the victory in World War II.

Powell said the UK’s Labour government is willing to develop a consistent, lasting and strategic relationship with China. He expressed the government’s readiness to further strengthen regular dialogue with China at all levels and promote practical cooperation.

The two sides also exchanged views on issues including the Ukraine crisis.
