BEIJING -- Despite a 4-0 loss to defending champion Japan in the final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Chinese men's football team delivered the country's best-ever performance at the AFC U23 Asian Cup and earned widespread applause at home and abroad.

"This scoreline is tough to take, but that's football," said Chinese head coach Antonio Puche. "You saw it yourself - they have outstanding players, and their performance was near perfect. We fought hard. I'm incredibly proud of this team and my players."

The General Administration of Sport of China sent a congratulatory letter, noting, "You have set a historic best for Chinese teams in this tournament. This achievement marks the first time in 22 years that a Chinese men's national team has reached the final of an international competition."

"Starting from the fourth group seed, you faced tough opponents without fear, constantly overcoming obstacles and making history. With impressive performances and a flawless defense, you fought your way to the final," wrote the Chinese Football Association (CFA).

"Your remarkable performances earned respect, admiration, and cheers. National teams at all levels should look to you as a role model, learning from your team spirit, fighting will, and tactical discipline to transform this honor into collective action and powerful momentum for the growth of Chinese football," the association added.

China had made history in the semifinal by beating Vietnam 3-0 to reach the U23 Asian Cup final for the first time. Before the final, they had gone unbeaten with a perfect record in the tournament and had not conceded a single goal.

The players' performances have attracted global attention. Brazilian star Neymar praised the team on social media, commenting "Que Maneiro!" ("How cool!").

Former Manchester City player Scott Carson praised goalkeeper Li Hao's outstanding performance in a highlights reel, calling his saves "impressive" and wishing the team luck in the final.

Czech legend Petr Cech also sent a video message to Li, saying, "I wish you all the best for the final. The finals are special, and you've had a great tournament with many clean sheets. Good luck!" Cech even commented under one of Li's posts: "Wonderful clean sheets! Can I have a pair of signed gloves? Good luck with the final."

Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta also recorded a video message for defender Peng Xiao: "I saw you scored two goals - I only scored three in my career at Milan. Best of luck in the final!"

English football great and Ballon d'Or winner Michael Owen commented: "Impressive work, lads. Go get that title."

Ahead of the final, expectations for China were high. Saudi newspaper Arab News called the match "the most important game for Chinese football in over 20 years." Afghanistan's Ariana News noted that "China's journey to the final has been built on discipline, preparation, and growing confidence."

"The Chinese team is the best defensive squad in the tournament, yet to concede a single goal. Their ability to disrupt opponents' play has been evident in victories over Uzbekistan and Vietnam," reported Vietnam's Vnexpress before the final.

Despite the loss, China's performance received wide domestic support. A football fan nicknamed "BoWenguan" posted: "China didn't become runners-up by losing one game; they became runners-up by winning many others. Losing 4-0 is tough, but we must acknowledge the gap between Chinese and Japanese football, recognize it, and work to close it. The future is bright."

Former international Huang Bowen encouraged the U23 players on social media, writing: "You leave Jeddah with hope in your hearts. The future is yours, the journey isn't over, but we will keep fighting."

"We still have a long way to go in Chinese football. While the gap is evident, hope shines brighter than a title at this moment," said fan Yuanaini.

Another supporter Beaubois added: "At least we can now see the hope of making it to the World Cup. As long as we continue competing in international tournaments, progress will follow. Let's take this loss and keep moving forward."

"Their outstanding performances have boosted the morale of Chinese football and injected strong confidence in its revitalization," the General Administration of Sport of China wrote in their congratulatory letter.

In 2025, grassroots football passion rose in China, fueled by the Su Super League, which has ignited interest in local football leagues across multiple cities and encouraged youth participation. CFA President Song Kai described the Su Super League and similar local competitions as "the harbingers of spring for the revitalization of Chinese football."

Of the 23 players on this U23 team, 11 were born in 2005 or later and remain eligible for the 2028 U23 Asian Cup, giving the team continuity for future cycles. Their next major target is the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, scheduled for September.

Nike, the team's official equipment sponsor, unveiled a poster with the message, "We'll be back," along with the caption: "This team has made history by reaching the final for the first time, but this won't be the last time."

"It's the new beginning, not the end!" wrote fan Xixi.
