Gansu leads China in museums per capita

Gansu province now has the highest number of museums per capita in China, a highlight of the province's growing momentum in cultural heritage protection and utilization, according to governor Ren Zhenhe.

Ren made the remarks while delivering the annual government work report at the opening of the fourth session of the 14th Gansu Provincial People's Congress on Tuesday.

According to a recent report from the Gansu Cultural Relics Bureau, six new museums were registered, bringing the provincial total to 263, equivalent to one museum for every 93,200 people.

More than 700 exhibitions and 20,000 online and offline education and study programs were staged over the past year, attracting more than 33 million visits.

 Drawing on iconic cultural symbols, such as the Dunhuang flying apsaras and the Bronze Galloping Horse housed in the Gansu Provincial Museum, the province has developed over 4,000 new cultural and creative products, with annual sales reaching 130 million yuan ($18 million).

The government work report shows that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Gansu's GDP reached 1.37 trillion yuan, up 33.6 percent from the end of the previous plan. Since 2022, the province's economic growth has outpaced the national average for 16 consecutive quarters. In 2025, Gansu's GDP grew 5.8 percent, ranking second nationwide, while per capita disposable income rose 6.1 percent, the third-fastest growth rate in the country.
