Xizang unveils plans to boost its standing in global economic landscape

The Xizang autonomous region unveiled plans to expand its role as a high-level gateway to South Asia, underscoring its commitment to fostering deeper global connections. The plans were detailed in the 2026 Xizang government work report, which was released at the region's annual regional legislative session on Saturday.

Presenting the report, Karma Tsetan, chairman of the region, noted that the ambitious vision promises to bolster infrastructure development and trade networks, aiming to position Xizang as a critical link in the global economic landscape.

"Key initiatives include the acceleration of national logistics hubs — such as land-port and port-type centers — and the establishment of cross-border e-commerce pilot zones, as well as border economic cooperation zones," Karma Tsetan said.

The region plans to maintain operations at 14 traditional border trade points while introducing 12 additional ones by 2026, reflecting a robust push for enhanced international trade, he said.

According to the Lhasa Customs, Xizang has seen its import and export value of goods reach an estimated 8.47 billion yuan in 2025.

The customs agency said that the ongoing implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative is a driving force in Xizang's economic transformation.

Tenzin, an official with the customs agency, said that the initiative has significantly widened the region's global trade network, noting that by 2025, Xizang had achieved import and export activity with 155 countries or regions, with nations along the Belt and Road emerging as key trade partners. "Bilateral trade with these countries reached a total value of 5.74 billion yuan ($825 million), comprising 67.77 percent of the region's total trade volume."

Tenzin said consumer goods, labor-intensive products, and mechanical and electrical products account for most of Xizang's trade activities.

Imports from Belt and Road countries primarily include metal ores, unprocessed copper materials, and cultural artifacts. Meanwhile, exports such as clothing, new energy vehicles, and cultural products are driving the region's trade growth, showcasing Xizang's growing presence in international markets.
