Foreign diplomats join Chongqing's New Year market event

Ivan Frank Olea, consul general of the Philippines in Chongqing, said it was the first time his consulate had taken part in the market. Because Philippine and Chinese cultures share many similarities, he said, the delegation chose to present popular foods to the public.

Among the busiest attractions were cooking demonstrations and ready-to-eat specialties. Italy prepared pizza and desserts on site, Vietnam served fresh spring rolls and coffee, and Australia promoted beef and wine. Uruguay displayed wines and amethyst crafts, while Pakistan and Myanmar highlighted traditional cuisine and handmade products. Belarus brought vodka and chocolate.

Domestic vendors also joined the market with Chongqing snacks, festive goods, and holiday souvenirs.

Visitors could try traditional Chinese games, including chuiwan, a sport dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279) that resembles present-day golf, and touhu, in which players throw arrows into wine pitchers. Booths offering Spring Festival couplets added to the holiday atmosphere.
