Kazakhstan Surges in Global Ranking: An Unexpected Economic Leap

Kazakhstan has unexpectedly emerged as one of the countries that achieved one of the most notable structural leaps in the world. According to the 2024 results, the country ranked 55th out of 145 nations in the Economic Complexity Index (ECI), calculated annually by Harvard Growth Lab. Kazakhstan’s score reached 0.38, according to EconomyKZ.org, an analytical Telegram channel covering Kazakhstan’s economy.

Yet behind these dry numbers lies a far more compelling story.

          A Rewritten Reality

What makes this development especially intriguing is not only the current position, but the revision of past data.

In the previous version of the ranking, Kazakhstan was placed 89th in 2023 with a score of -0.44. At the time, this appeared to confirm perceptions of a commodity-dependent economy with limited diversification.

However, in the updated version for that same year, Kazakhstan is ranked 52nd with a score of 0.45.

In other words, the assessment was fundamentally revised. Since 2023, Kazakhstan has been classified as a country with a more complex economy. This dramatically changes how recent economic dynamics are perceived.

Yes, in 2024 the country slipped slightly from 52nd to 55th place. But strategically, this does not represent a setback - rather, it signals consolidation. Kazakhstan has moved closer to the world’s top 50 economies in terms of complexity.

What Is Economic Complexity - and Why It Matters

The Economic Complexity Index does not measure the size of exports, but their structure. The more diversified and technologically sophisticated the goods a country produces and exports, the higher its ranking.

It is an indicator of how diversified an economy is and how capable it is of generating high value-added products.

Simply put, it reflects whether a country is moving beyond a raw-materials-based model and developing new industries.

A Target Achieved Ahead of Schedule

          There is another important aspect.

Within Kazakhstan’s State Planning System documents, particularly in the Strategic Development Plan of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2025 (which has since expired), one of the official targets was to reach 55th place in the Economic Complexity Index by 2025.

In practice, this target has already been achieved.

This is a rare case where a formal strategic benchmark has been met on time - or even ahead of schedule.

The Most Dynamic Leap in the Region

Looking at the 2020-2024 period makes the shift even more striking.

Kazakhstan climbed from 87th to 55th place - a gain of 32 positions.

          For comparison:

          • Uzbekistan improved moderately, moving from 86th to 70th place.
          • Kyrgyzstan has largely stagnated, shifting from 78th to 72nd.
          • Turkmenistan remains among the laggards, moving marginally from 127th to 126th.
          • Russia, meanwhile, declined significantly over the same period, dropping from 38th to 67th place.

Against this backdrop, Kazakhstan appears to be the most dynamic economy in the region in terms of rising economic complexity.

          More Than Just a Ranking

It is important to understand that this rise is not merely a shift in a table.

It signals structural changes. It suggests that the range of exported products is expanding, new industrial competencies are emerging, and the country’s manufacturing base is strengthening.

However, a key question remains: which specific sectors drove this leap, and how sustainable is it?

If the growth is rooted in deep diversification, it could mark a transition toward a new development model. If the effect is temporary, the challenge will be to maintain momentum and avoid losing ground.

One thing is clear: Kazakhstan has taken a step that reshapes how its economic profile is viewed on the global map.

The real intrigue now is whether this surge will become a genuine turning point - moving the country decisively away from a commodity-based model toward a high-complexity economy.
