Octopus Energy CEO: Western leaders should embrace China's green tech

Western leaders should embrace China's advancements in green technology to deepen cooperation and help deliver a more sustainable future, said Greg Jackson, founder and CEO of Octopus Energy Group, during his recent visit to China with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

"This trip is about helping politicians from the West understand the incredible technology advances here in China," Jackson said, noting that China has emerged as a global leader in new energy after two decades of relentless innovation in solar batteries, electric vehicles and wind power.

"I hope we can take more of those great technologies innovated in China and use them to deliver cheaper power for people elsewhere in the world," he added.

Octopus Energy has partnered with China's BYD to develop cars equipped with bidirectional charging technology, which allows car batteries to draw power from the grid and feed electricity back into it when needed. This innovation has enabled British drivers to enjoy 18,000 kilometers of driving per year at no cost, creating new value through smart energy use.

Jackson emphasized that Europe could benefit greatly from adopting China's innovative new energy technologies to provide consumers with cheaper and cleaner energy.

Furthermore, he added that, Octopus Energy's expertise in grid optimization could help China address the complexity of integrating more renewable energy into its grid, creating mutual benefits for both sides.

Global communities share the common goal of affordable and clean energy—an objective where China's green tech plays a pivotal role. Embracing these innovations and deepening collaborations with China would help build a greener and fairer future for all, Jackson added.
