Myriad beings
Tomb murals emerged as an important medium for ancient people to visualize the afterlife and express their ideas about existence during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). The tradition continued for centuries, portraying ethereal realms, social order and scenes of everyday life. Myriad Beings on the Walls, an exhibition now on at the Nanshan Museum in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, zooms in on the artistry of tomb murals of the Song (960-1279) and Jin (1115-1234) dynasties in Shanxi province. It illuminates the concept of "underground homes" built by people in ancient times, who used murals and brick carvings to imagine a future beyond life. The exhibition runs through April 12.
