Christie's presented Gerhard Richter's Abstraktes Bild at the public preview for its upcoming Hong Kong spring sale in Shanghai on March 7 and runs until 9th.
Widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary German artists, Richter is known for his diverse painting styles and subjects. Abstraktes Bild was created at a pinnacle moment in Richter's career, as he ascended to international prominence, in the same year as his groundbreaking 1991 Tate exhibition.
The masterpiece will make its auction debut as a leading highlight of the Hong Kong 20th/21st Century Evening Sale on March 27, taking place live at Christie's Asia Pacific headquarters at The Henderson during Hong Kong Art Week.
The sale is also headlined by a series of works by renowned masters of the 20th century. Zao Wou-Ki's Cathedrale et ses environs (Cathedral and its Surroundings 07.08.51-08.09.51) marks his modern interpretation of the European Grand Tour and exemplifies his early stylistic breakthrough; Marc Chagall's Pastorale offers a dreamlike celebration of the artist's expressive use of color; and Sanyu's Kneeling Horse on Carpet likewise appears at auction for the first time.
