          A Chinese government official said victory has been achieved in the rebuilding of areas worst hit by a devastating earthquake three years ago in southwest China's Sichuan province.

          Mu Hong, Vice Director of the country's National Development and Reform Commission, said 95 percent of the post-quake reconstruction projects have been completed so far.

          Mu made the remarks during a press conference that detailed the reconstruction of the Sichuan quake zones three years after an 8.0-magnitude quake struck. [Full story]

          The 2008 Sichuan earthquake occurred at 14:28:01.42 on May 12, 2008 in Southwest China's Sichuan province. The 8.0-magnitude quake had its epicenter in Wenchuan county, Sichuan province.

          The quake left 87,000 people dead or missing and millions homeless.

          In the aftermath of the quake, Chinese citizens and groups poured aid into the area and that effort continues. The government has launched a reconstruction effort.

          County rebuilds after quake

          Three years after a deadly earthquake struck Sichuan province, once-devastated quake zones are regaining their vitality and residents are finding ways to continue their lives.

          The catastrophic quake that occurred on May 12, 2008 destroyed the entire downtown area of Beichuan county. Rather than clear the ruins away, officials decided to reopen the site as a park. Chen Shimin, a 50-year-old Beichuan resident who used to sell pancakes with her husband outside the gate of Beichuan High School, recently became a staff member there. [Full story]

          A primary school severely damaged in the devastating earthquake in Sichuan province has been successfully rebuilt.

          The reconstruction, sponsored by China Unicom, was completed on April 14. China's second largest mobile carrier donated more than 7.3 million yuan ($1.12 million) through the China Children and Teenagers' Fund. [Full story]

          Deyang: CNOOC helps rebuild hospital

          A handover ceremony marking the completion of the construction of Deyang People's Hospital Internal Inpatient Building was held on April 1, 2011, as an assistance program for Sichuan's post-earthquake rebuild.

          The new inpatient building, with an investment of 86.8 million yuan ($13.37 million) from China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), covers 24,500 square meters and can hold up to 500 beds.  [Full story]

          Jiangyou: Private company to build a village road

          Jiangyou Shunhui Investment (Group) Ltd Co, a private property developer and trade company, has donated 500,000 yuan ($77,000) for a one-kilometer road to be built in a remote village called Shengma.

          More than 100 villagers from about 30 families would benefit from the construction of the road during their rebuilding after the Sichuan earthquake. [Full story]

          A primary school funded by Luzhou Laojiao Company was completed on April 28, 2010 in An County, north of Sichuan province.

          The Sichuan-based liquor company donated 26.8 million yuan ($4.12 million) in June 2008 after the Huagai Primary School was seriously damaged by the earthquake in May. [Full story]

          Yanmen: HSBC Bank funds rebuilding of primary school 

          The new Yanmen primary school, which was funded by HSBC Bank through the Hong Kong Red Cross, was completed June 10, 2010.

          The bank donated 5.4 million yuan ($831,000) in June 2009 to rebuild the school which was damaged by the earthquake. The 7,123-square-meter new school holds 16 classes with more than 800 students. [Full story]

          Construction of Sony-funded school completed in Sichuan

          The construction of a building at Jiangyou city's Zhonghuaboai school in Sichuan was completed in April 2010.

          Sony Corporation donated 3 million yuan through the China Red Cross Society to build the school in an effort to help the province with its reconstruction work. Sichuan province was badly damaged by a major earthquake in May 2008. [Full story]

          Mary Kay helps women and children 'triumph over tragedy'

          Deyang and Guangyuan, quake-hit cities in Sichuan province, have received a total of 2 million yuan from Mary Kay China Cosmetics Co Ltd to construct two primary schools.

          An earthquake shattered the lives of the villagers, but in the aftermath of rebuilding, traditional paintings have helped them pick up the pieces.

          The Wenchuan earthquake destroyed one-third of the houses in Sichuan province's Shejiantai village, transforming the hometown of the Mianzhu School of New Year Paintings into a portrait of seismic destruction. But reconstruction has reincarnated Shejiantai into a picture-perfect tourist attraction. Murals of New Year Paintings, or nianhua, adorn the exteriors of each of the 2,700 spacious new homes ranging from some 200 to 400 sq m. The houses were built according to local architectural traditions by the government of Suzhou city in East China's Jiangsu province at no cost to the residents. [Full story]
