Southwest China's Lijiang Yunnan province，is planning to build a World Primrose Garden in its Jiuzihai district. It also plans to hold the first Jiuzihai Primrose Festival, local media reported on July 18, 2010.

Primroses are one of the three most important horticultural plants in the world. Lijiang district is a distribution center for primroses.Lijiang have more than 40 different types of primroses. 5 different types of primroses grow in Jiuzihai. Jiuzihai is located 26 kilometers away from the old town of Lijiang and is to the east of the Yulong Snow Mountains. It is an UNESCO listed site.

In 2004, many scholars and officials convened in Jiuzihai to study the feasibility of a World Primrose Garden there. In August 2009, the government entrusted relevant research institutes to make a formal report about the feasibility of the project.

Zhang Yujun, ａprofessor from Beijing Forestry University, introduced the blueprint of the World Primrose Garden project. The project intends to focus on eco-tourism based on the primroses. It plans to boost the development of economy, society and culture through eco-tourism. The whole construction process would take three years. If?approved to start, this Garden will open to tourists in 2012.

He Aijun, from the Asia Green Culture Association, said that the World Primrose Garden will promote Jiuzihai Plateau Wetland protection and the scientific study of primroses. The World Primrose Garden will add to the diversity of the Lijiang area.
