Industrial growth tops city's agenda

With an investment of 1.27 billion yuan (US$157 million) in infrastructure, the four parks highlight four pillar industries: the chemical industry, metallurgical industry, automobile and agricultural products processing.

"We plan to concentrate on major industrial projects in these parks to form an industrial chain and realize large-scale development," said Cheng Baoying, assistant to the mayor of Jilin City.

Besides supporting major State-owned industrial enterprises, such as Jilin Chemical Industrial Company, Jilin Fuel Ethanol Company, Jilin Jianlong Steel Company and Jilin Chemical Fibre Group, the city also encourages the development of private enterprises, which are important targets of investment.

To highlight the characteristic of being an "ice and snow city," Jilin is now accelerating its winter tourism development.

A ski resort and an ice sports centre are under construction. Upon completion, they will be able to hold international competitions, as well as attracting winter sport fans and tourists.

With an ideal natural environment, the city has set a goal of making itself one of the most attractive cities in Northeast China.

"We have always believed that a good environment is an invaluable asset to attract investors," Cheng said.

To achieve its goal, the city has launched several campaigns against pollution in recent years.

For example, "the Project of Clean Water and Green Belt" has resulted in the improvement of hundreds of wastewater outlets at the bank of the Songhua River, making the water much cleaner.

To realize sustainable development, the city has strengthened its protection of the ecological environment, such as water resources, mountains and forests.

The efforts have won the city many honours from the central government, such as National Garden City, China's Excellent Tourism City, China Habitat Prize and China's Green City.
