Pork prices in the country are not likely to continue to rise significantly in future, as steps have been taken to increase supply, government officials said.

"Both the central and local governments have taken a series of measures to boost pork supply while the current high prices should also dampen consumer demand," Ministry of Commerce market operations deputy director Zhu Xiaoliang said.

Meanwhile Zhou Wangjun, price department deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, said that it was premature to conclude that hikes in food prices such as pork will automatically fuel a surge in nationwide inflation, noting that the government has measures to keep inflation in check, including maintaining tight controls over prices for household utilities including water, power and natural gas.
