Q1 power generation jumps 20% to 948.9b kWhs

BEIJING - China's electricity generation rose 20.8 percent year on year in the first quarter of the year to 948.9 billion kilowatt-hours (kWhs), the National Energy Administration (NEA) said Friday.

Breaking the figures down, thermal, nuclear power and wind power generation increased 24.3 percent, 7 percent and 99.3 percent, respectively, compared with the same period last year, while hydropower generation declined 5 percent, the NEA said in a statement on its website.

China is also developing offshore wind power projects, deputy director of the NEA's New Energy and Renewable Energy Department Shi Lishan said.

Meanwhile, China's electricity consumption in the first quarter rose 24.2 percent year on year to 969.5 billion kWhs.

China may increase its fuel consumption in the second quarter driven on the back of robust economic growth and increased domestic travel during the Shanghai World Expo, said NEA official Zhou Xi'an.

Apparent demand for refined oil products including gasoline and diesel oil may rise 5 percent year on year to between 54.7 million and 55.7 million tons, Zhou added.
